A downloadable game

In the year 2052. AI has completely taken over the world, humanity is extinct. All that's left is the machines and the destroyed remnants of civilization. That and a WHOLE LOT OF TRASH. You, as an AI robot that exists in this world canonically, cannot stand for that! Take charge and start sorting in Reduce Reuse Repeat!

Reduce Reuse Repeat is a simple game in which the player must sort trash into multiple cans as trash is going down the level. There are several surprises to shake up the gameplay loop as well such as munitions that explode if they get sorted into bins. There are 3 levels in total, try your best to complete them all!

Reduce Reuse Repeat is our team of 3's entry to the game jam VimJam4. The Jam took place over 10 days and had several rules. These rules are listed bellow along with a brief description of how we accomplished each challenge

Theme: Cross Paths

The theme crossed paths is a very vague one that I think our team took in an interesting direction. For this project we had the vision of items traveling down a conveyer and being mixed together. Quite literally the items being on a path and being crossed together. From there we had a few ideas about where to take it, in fact we almost ended up making a train themed game, but in the end we settled on recycling.

Mechanical FocusMake a game which features checkpoints. You can get away with simply having them, but try to make them a critical or interesting part of the game, or work in an unusual or unexpected way.

The game revolves around getting to the end of each work day. Each work day is a checkpoint that progresses you further in the game's three levels but also serves to lock the score you got into the game. If you survive the work day but aren't happy with your score you can go back and try said level again to get the highest score you can, but once you progress you will need to restart from the very beginning if you want to raise your score

In a Song: A single session of the game takes place in the duration of one piece of music. Like a rhythm game, but not necessarily a rhythm game. The gameplay can be unrelated to the music, but wouldn't it be better if it was?

We have music playing through the background of each level. This works as a timer for us to structure the level length around making sure each stage is under 4 minutes in length.

Shapely: All graphics are made from simple flat-shaded single-color shapes. Get as complicated as you like with the polygons, but limiting to simple squares, circles, and triangles would be extra cool.

We have simple shapes throughout our project representing the various pieces of trash that the player needs to sort. We tried to keep everything even down to the UI and map very simply designed which ended up giving plenty of style to our 3D game.

Two Buttons: All gameplay uses at most two buttons. This could be left and right, jump and shoot, right and jump, or any other pair of actions, each mapped to a single button. You can get creative with button holds and a "both buttons" option but it's more pure to stick to two actions.

This was the hardest challenge to work around for sure. Making a game with only two buttons is not an easy feat. We accomplished this in a slightly cheesy way by making the mouse cursor the controller and using left click as one of our two buttons. The other button is used for pause as that functionality is nice in games. If you don't count Pause our game is technically one button!
